Baratang Island

Limestone caves & India's only mud volcanoes

Baratang is the Andamans' adventure chapter: a dawn start, a road convoy through dense tribal-reserve forest, then a speedboat weaving through mangrove creeks to caves hung with limestone formations that are still growing. It feels like a different country from the beach islands — because it nearly is.

The day runs on rules: vehicles cross the Jarawa reserve only in escorted convoys (the first leaves Jirkatang around 6:30 AM), and stopping or photography inside the reserve is strictly prohibited and strictly enforced. Go with an operator who respects that — it exists to protect the Jarawa people.

How to reach

Top things to do

Limestone caves

Stalactites and flowstone in living formation — carry a torch, the interior is unlit.

Mud volcano

Small, quietly bubbling craters — the only ones in India. A short detour from the jetty.

Mangrove creek ride

The speedboat run through tunnel-like mangrove channels is half the reason to come.

Parrot Island

At dusk, thousands of parakeets funnel onto one mangrove island — needs an overnight or late boat, ask us to plan it.

Best time to visit: November to April
