On the right night, every paddle stroke in Havelock’s mangrove creeks ignites blue-green light — plankton that flash when the water moves. It is one of the Andamans’ most magical experiences, and one of the easiest to get wrong.
The rule is the moon: the glow is only clearly visible in the dark week around the new moon. Time your trip to a full moon and you will see beautiful mangroves and almost no light. Tours run about 1.5–2 hours, cost around ₹3,000–₹3,500 per person, and paddle in stable double kayaks with a guide — no experience needed.
Two honest warnings from us: phone cameras mostly fail to capture it (long-exposure rigs manage; memories do better), and the monsoon months can suspend tours. The best window is November to February on no-moon nights.
Planning around a new moon takes a calendar and some ferry juggling — exactly the kind of detail we build into custom itineraries at no markup.
