Cellular Jail & the Light and Sound Show

The Cellular Jail is why Port Blair matters to Indian history: the “Kala Pani” where freedom fighters were held in 698 solitary cells radiating from a central tower. Walking its corridors and the gallows room is sobering in a way no textbook manages.

Visit twice, in effect: once in daylight for the galleries, memorial flame and cell blocks (allow 1.5–2 hours), and again at dusk for the Light & Sound Show, which retells the jail’s story under the old peepal tree. Shows run in Hindi and English in separate evening slots — the English show is usually the later one, and tickets sell out on holiday weekends, so book ahead.

Local tips: carry water, the evening show is open-air so a light mosquito repellent helps, and combine the visit with Corbyn’s Cove beach 15 minutes away for a complete first evening. Entry to both jail and show is ticketed and included in every Azure Trails itinerary.
