Scuba in the Andamans for Absolute Beginners (Can’t Swim? Still Fine.)

The myth that stops the most people: “I can’t swim, so I can’t dive.” For a beginner’s Discover Scuba Dive (DSD) in Havelock, you don’t need to swim a stroke — an instructor manages your buoyancy and literally stays within arm’s reach the whole time. Warm water, 3–6 metres deep, fish everywhere.

First-dive facts Detail
Cost ₹3,500–₹4,500 (shore DSD, incl. gear, training, photos)
Time in water 30–40 minutes, after a 20–30 minute briefing
Age 10+ with most operators
Season October–May for the best visibility (15–25 m)

The two rules that actually matter: be honest on the medical form (asthma, heart and ear conditions need a doctor’s clearance — a good dive shop will refuse rather than risk you), and never dive within 18–24 hours of a flight. Schedule dives early in the trip, not the day before you fly home. That’s why our itineraries put the dive on the Elephant Beach day, never the last morning.

Every Azure Trails package includes one complimentary shore dive per person with underwater photos. Hooked afterwards? Boat dives to sites like The Wall run from ~₹5,500 for two tanks, and PADI Open Water courses take 3–4 days — the scuba experience page and Havelock guide have the detail, or ask us to build a diving-heavy trip.

Quick answers

Can non-swimmers scuba dive in Andaman?

Yes — beginner DSD dives require no swimming ability. Your instructor controls the equipment and stays with you; you breathe, look and point at fish.

Is scuba diving in Andaman safe?

With certified operators, yes — shallow sites, small groups, strict briefings. The real safety rules are the medical form and the 18–24 hour no-fly window after diving.

Where is the best diving in the Andamans?

Havelock is the hub — easy shore sites at Elephant Beach for beginners and boat sites like The Wall and Aquarium for certified divers.
